Gili Air — The balanced Gili: a real village, good restaurants, easy snorkelling and just enough life after dark.
The three Gili Islands

Things to See in Gili Air

Gili Air is small enough to see in a day and pleasant enough to see again every day: a harbour, a reef, a sunset coast and a village in the middle.

The sights

The harbour and south coast, Gili Air

The harbour and south coast

Life on Gili Air starts at the little harbour on the south side: boats from Lombok unloading everything from vegetables to cement, fishermen mending nets, travellers stepping ashore. The lane running east from here is the island’s main street, with cafés, dive centres and small shops.

ℹ️ Free, always open. Busiest when the public boats arrive in the morning.

The east-coast reef, Gili Air

The east-coast reef

A shallow coral shelf runs along the whole east coast and drops away 50–100 metres out. Turtles graze along the edge, and there are parrotfish, angelfish and the occasional reef shark. Get in towards the north-east, drift south with the usual current and get out near the restaurants.

ℹ️ Free; gear for rent along the beach. Best at mid to high tide — the shelf is too shallow at low water. Wear reef shoes for the first metres.

The west coast at sunset, Gili Air

The west coast at sunset

The sun sets behind Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan and, on a clear evening, Bali’s Mount Agung. A string of simple bars puts out beanbags and lights fires on the sand. At low tide the reef flat is exposed in ridges and pools that turn silver and orange.

ℹ️ Free. 15–20 minutes’ walk from the harbour; bring a torch for the return, as parts of the path are unlit.

The island loop, Gili Air

The island loop

The coastal path is about five kilometres round. The east and south are firm; stretches of the north and west are deep sand, so walkers have an easier time than cyclists. Go clockwise in the morning for shade on the east, or anticlockwise in the afternoon to end with the sunset.

ℹ️ Free. About 1.5 hours on foot. Bicycle rental is widely available if you prefer to ride and push.

The village interior, Gili Air

The village interior

Turn inland from any point on the coast and within two minutes you are among coconut palms, vegetable plots, grazing cattle and family compounds. This is the island’s real centre, with its mosque and school, and the reason Air feels like a place where people live rather than a resort.

ℹ️ Free. Dress modestly, greet people, and ask before photographing anyone.

The dive sites

Han’s Reef, off the north-east, is a gentle sandy slope famous for small creatures — frogfish, ghost pipefish, seahorses — and ideal for training. Air Wall on the west side has soft corals and turtles. Boats also reach every site around Meno and Trawangan in 10–25 minutes.

ℹ️ Several dive centres and freediving schools on the island; two or three boats a day. Prices are agreed island-wide, so choose on group size and instructors.

Sunrise over Rinjani, Gili Air

Sunrise over Rinjani

From the north-east shore the sun comes up directly behind Lombok’s 3,726-metre volcano. In the dry season the air is clear enough to see the whole massif turn from grey to pink while fishing boats head out across flat water.

ℹ️ Free. Sunrise is around 6–6.30 am all year. Clouds usually build over the mountain by mid-morning.
