Senggigi & the Harbours Travel Guide

Practical advice for Lombok’s west coast: which bay to stay in, how to eat well, what the harbours are really like and how to stay safe on the road.

Areas

Central Senggigi

The main cluster of restaurants, bars, mini-markets, ATMs and dive and tour offices, along the coast road behind the beach. It is low-key; some evenings it feels half asleep. Good for a short, easy stay.

Batu Layar and Batu Bolong (south)

Between Senggigi and Mataram: the sea temple, a few older resorts and a string of local beach cafés that are popular at sunset.

Mangsit, Malimbu and Nipah (north)

Quieter bays with boutique hotels and villas on or above the beach. Closer to the harbours and more scenic; you will want transport in the evening.

Sire, Medana and Tanjung

The coast just past Bangsal, facing the Gilis: a golf course, a few top-end resorts and long, empty beaches of pale sand. The most direct mainland alternative to staying on an island.

Mataram

The capital sprawls into the old port of Ampenan and the Balinese quarter of Cakranegara. Come for markets, temples, malls and proper hospitals rather than for atmosphere.

Eating

West Lombok is the home of ayam taliwang, small free-range chicken grilled with a sauce of chilli, garlic and shrimp paste, eaten with plecing kangkung. Mataram and the road to Senggigi have well-known specialists. Try sate bulayak — beef satay with rice cakes wrapped in palm leaf — at the stalls near Narmada and Lingsar, and grilled fish on the sand at Nipah.

Money and services

This is where to get things done before the islands: reliable ATMs, supermarkets, pharmacies, SIM cards and the island’s main hospitals are all in Mataram or Senggigi. Withdraw cash here — island machines are less dependable.

Handling Bangsal

  • Have your driver drop you at the barrier and walk straight to the seafront ticket office. Tickets sold anywhere else cost more.
  • Public boat fares are fixed and posted. Shared speedboats cost several times as much and leave at set times.
  • Carry your own bag. If someone picks it up uninvited, they will expect payment.
  • Do not accept “help” with onward tickets, accommodation or mosquito coils. A friendly, firm “no, thank you” is enough.
  • If the crowd bothers you, pre-book a private boat from Teluk Nara and skip Bangsal altogether.

Safety

  • Road safety is the main risk on Lombok. Wear a helmet, avoid riding after dark and do not drive after drinking.
  • Swimming. Several west-coast beaches have a steep shore break and rips. Ask locally before swimming at an empty beach.
  • Health. Mataram has the best hospitals between Bali and Flores, and the region’s recompression chamber for divers.
  • Dress. Lombok is more conservative than Bali. Away from resort beaches, cover shoulders and knees.

Sample plans

One night in transit

Land in the afternoon and drive to Senggigi. Walk the beach, see the sunset from Pura Batu Bolong and eat ayam taliwang. Next morning drive the coast road, stopping at the Malimbu viewpoint, and be on a boat to the Gilis by ten.

Two days

Day one: Mataram’s Islamic Center and Mayura, then Narmada and Pura Lingsar with sate bulayak for lunch; sunset at Nipah. Day two: a private-boat day around the three Gilis from Teluk Nara, or a car over the Pusuk pass to the Senaru waterfalls.

Three days

Add a full-day drive to the Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls in central Lombok, or a snorkelling day in the Secret Gilis off Sekotong, an hour or so to the south.

FAQs: Senggigi & the harbours

Frequently asked questions

Which harbour do I need for the Gili Islands?

Bangsal for public boats and scheduled speedboats; Teluk Nara or Teluk Kodek for private and pre-booked boats. Fast boats from Bali also call at Bangsal. Your ticket or hotel will tell you which.

Is Bangsal harbour as bad as people say?

It is pushy rather than dangerous, and much improved on its old reputation. Walk to the official ticket office, buy your own ticket, carry your own bag and you will be on a boat within the hour.

Should I stay in Senggigi or on a Gili?

On a Gili, if the islands are the reason for your trip. Choose Senggigi for a night around a flight, for larger resort hotels, or as a base for touring Lombok by car.

How far is Senggigi from the Gili Islands?

About 30–45 minutes by road to the harbours, then 10–40 minutes by boat depending on the island and the type of boat.

Can I visit the Gilis as a day trip from Senggigi?

Yes. Private boats from Teluk Nara visit all three islands with snorkelling stops, and organised day trips include hotel pick-up. Start early for calm water.

Is there a boat directly from Senggigi to the Gilis?

Some operators run or list direct boats from Senggigi, and resorts can arrange private launches. Most people drive to Teluk Nara or Bangsal, which is quicker and smoother.
