The Gili Islands are three tiny coral-fringed islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, just located off the northwestern coast of Lombok, Indonesia, which are regarded by most travelers as Indonesia’s best kept secret because of their stunning scenery. All of these islands can be easily accessible by fast boats from not only Lombok but also Bali, Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.
On the Gili Islands, you will find a number of activities to enjoy, including diving, snorkeling, surfing, stand up paddleboarding, fishing, horseback riding, yoga, cooking classes and so on. Since no motor vehicle is allowed in the Gili Islands, one can only walk on foot, ride a bicycle, or take the “Cidomo”, which is a horse-drawn carriage, to round the islands. The three Gilis are also wonderful destinations for someone who is looking for serenity among the paradise-like beaches, resorts and villas. And for those who want to party, there are numerous bars and pubs with live music open all year round, especially in Gili Trawangan, which is being called the “Party Island”. Gili Air is the most populated island out of the three Gilis, and it is the only island that has subterranean fresh water, the word “Air” means “Water” in Indonesian, and that’s why Gili Air was named for. While Gili Meno is less developed than its neighbors to the right and left, it still retains an untouched beauty of nature and may be the best choice for people who don’t like crowds.
